Smart Energy Zones
The Victorian Government is looking for partners to show how communities can cut their greenhouse emissions using a variety of energy solutions.
Smart Energy Zones aim to demonstrate the benefits of integrating several innovative energy technologies into one location, delivering secure, clean, renewable power to local communities.
What is in a zone?
A zone could include:
- local energy generation, including cogeneration and small scale renewables
- micro-grids for distributing electricity, heating and cooling
- energy efficiency measures
- smart meters
- energy storage
- innovative electricity tariffs
What are the benefits?
Local communities can make a significant contribution to meet their own energy needs. Benefits for consumers, governments and business include:
- greenhouse gas emissions are reduced
- surplus energy is put back into the grid
- benefit is demonstrated to the community
- a model is established for communities across Victoria
- policy and regulatory frameworks are influenced

Sustainability Victoria will work with you to:
- identify opportunities for innovation in project concepts
- build the business case for sustainability within your project.
We have technical expertise and connections that will help you to access best practice and leading global research.
How are applications assessed?
An expert panel will consider all business cases against Smart Energy Zone's objectives and criteria.
How are projects funded?
The Victorian Government will invest $4 million over four years in Smart Energy Zones.
Successful projects will receive capital contributions. All project contributions will be determined on an individual basis.
Expressions of interest
Sustainability Victoria is now seeking expressions of interest from developers, local governments, industry and community-based interests developing greenfield or existing urban sites to become partners in this exciting initiative.Further information
