5 Star Homes
The average energy efficiency rating of houses in Victoria is currently only 2 stars. The 5 Star standard for residential homes makes sure that new homes in Victoria are built to incorporate certain environmental features.
With a few simple design and construction changes, plus the use of special water and energy saving features, you can make your new house or apartment:
- increase energy efficiency while heating and cooling by 50 percent or more
- reduce water consumption by up to 25 percent.
What is the 5 Star standard?
From 1 July, 2005, all new houses in Victoria must have:
- 5 Star energy rating for the building fabric, and
- a rainwater tank for toilet flushing or a solar hot water system.
An extension has been granted until 31 August 2007 to houses with a timber floor construction.
What are the benefits of a 5 Star home for me?
A 5 Star house:
- is more comfortable to live in
- has environmental benefits with reduced energy and water use
- will save money in heating and cooling your home.
How do 5 Star homes help our environment?
The way we build our houses can make a big difference to our environment. Our state's energy and water resources are under increasing pressure. As Victoria's population grows and the impact of climate change continues to develop, we need to think about the future right now.
