GreenPower
Victorians can reduce their greenhouse gas by switching to renewable energy. GreenPower is one of the easy ways we can all reduce our negative impact on the environment and be a part of the climate change solution.
GreenPower is renewable energy sourced from the sun, wind, water or waste that is purchased by your energy company on your behalf.
Why should I change?
When you purchase a GreenPower product, you
- reduce your personal greenhouse emissions
- support the development of renewable energy sources
- help reduce our reliance on the earth's limited fossil fuel resources.
Who sells GreenPower?
Most electricity providers now offer government accredited GreenPower to households. This means they are offering energy generated from clean renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, biomass and hydro.
Who monitors the program?
State governments around Australia are working together to run the GreenPower accreditation program. There are strict environmental and reporting standards for the renewable electricity products that are accredited as GreenPower.
How do I know it's GreenPower?
The good news is that GreenPower doesn't cost much more than regular, coal-fired electricity.
Make sure that you look for the accredited GreenPower ‘tick' label when you decide to buy a renewable energy product. It means your electricity supplier has met all set environmental and reporting requirements of the program.
How much does it cost?
The good news is that GreenPower doesn't cost much more than regular, coal-fired electricity. The added benefit is that when you purchase GreenPower, you directly influence the level of investment in renewable energy.

How do I make the switch?
Each energy supplier will have their own name for the accredited GreenPower product they sell, such as ‘GreenLiving' or ‘GreenEarth'. They will also have different options for the percentage of GreenPower that you can purchase.
To find out which option suits your house:
- consult the list of accredited providers at the GreenPower website (http://www.greenpower.gov.au/)
- call the customer service number on your electricity bill and tell them that you'd like to switch to their GreenPower accredited energy.
