What you can do this year
Try keeping clean with these actions
Turn off your hot water when you're away
When you are going away for an extended period, turn off your hot water system so it's not heating water when no-one's home.
Install an energy efficient system
Hot water accounts for around one quarter of the average household's energy costs. If you're choosing or replacing a hot water system, it's the prime time to choose an energy efficient system. Selecting the right size and type of system for your household can considerably lower your hot water costs.
If you live in a rural, regional and outer suburban area, you may also be eligible for a government rebate when you purchase an energy efficient hot water system.
Look for the stars
Gas water heaters, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers carry energy ratings labels to help you choose an efficient model. Look for models with more stars, as they'll be more energy efficient and have lower operating costs.
Using a high efficiency, 5 or 6 star rated hot water system can save an average family up to $50 per year on running costs or over $500 over a system's lifetime.
Go solar
With the exception of solar energy, every fuel that is used to heat water gives off gases which contribute to the greenhouse effect. In Victoria, solar hot water systems use well-established technology. You can now convert almost any existing gas or electric water service to solar.
Using the sun's energy to heat water can reduce your household hot water bills by more than 60 percent each year. That's a saving of around $200 for the average family. You may also be eligible for a government rebate when you install solar hot water heating.
